Background to my interest in teaching children with autism

A Spiritual Side to Psychotherapy, continued

I want to introduce you to Neurolinguistic Programming, Time Line Therapy, and the Fast Phobia Cure.  Essentially, NLP is about modeling excellence:

Let’s observe a really good family therapist and see what she does; perhaps we can teach someone else how to do it as well.

Let’s observe a really skilled hypnotherapist and see what he does; perhaps we can teach someone else how to do it as well.

Let’s observe a really good salesman and see what he does; perhaps we can teach someone else how to do it as well.

Let’s observe a really good speller and see what she does; perhaps we can teach someone else how to do it as well.

Let’s observe someone who is really good at making themselves anxious – the basic NLP question is “How do you do that?” – and see how she goes about the process of creating that emotional state; perhaps we can teach someone else how to do it as well (or perhaps we can screw it up for her so that it doesn’t work as well for her as it has in the past).

For example, I worked with the young man who was really angry. I asked him how he did that, i.e., what was the process that he went through to make himself angry.  It turned out that he kept replaying in his head the voice of his mother nattering at him, and it made him really angry – technically, he made himself angry in response to what he could hear her saying.  I asked him to see what it felt like to hear the same things in his father’s voice and, as it turned out, that work almost as well.  We tried a few other voices and, sure enough, they worked for him, too.  Then I had him try it in Mickey Mouse’s voice and that absolutely “broke him up.”  That one generated laughter rather than anger.
