Teaching Children with Autism

Teaching Children with Autism

Last night, I attended a meeting of Hamilton, Ontario parents whose childreen are being summarily denied IBI (Intensive Behavioural Intervention) because they no longer fall within the two to four age range that the government feels is the optimum time for treatment, the time when there is expected to be the biggest bang for the govenrment buck. Supposedly, this is being done for the sake of the children. It is not.

The stories these parents tell are heart breaking. Lack of safety-consciousness, aggression against self and others, lack of toilet training, etc., etc., etc. And so (1) unnecessary, (2) unethical, (3) unscientific, (4) immoral, and (5) fiscally irresponsible. All governments make mistakes. This is one of them, and it needs to be corrected.

In the meantime, there is a new book available that I believe can be helpful to parents of children such as these: Chaos to Calm, by Martha Gabler. It is inexpensive and readily available through any bookseller.
