I recently ran across a video by Greg Hanley on Functional Analysis that anyone interested in teaching children with autism should see. Everyone in the field knows about functional behavior analysis, of course, but few use it; the protocol developed by Iwata et al seems just too complicated. If you ‘google’ Gregory Hanley functional analysis and treatment, however, you will find a review that may make a believer of you – Functional Assessment of Problem Behavior: Dispelling Myths, Overcoming Implementation Obstacles, and Developing New Lore. You will also find an outline for an open-ended FA interview and suggestions for how to treat the problem behaviours being examined.
